Why I'm Building Mushin

A focus tool born from my own frustration.

Mushin

I've been building something for months. It's called Mushin, and before I show you what it is, I want to tell you why I developed it.

My problem with productivity

I'm not a naturally organized person, although I really enjoy learning and putting into practice different techniques and tools. Sometimes I flow... and sometimes I get lost in chaos.

In my years as a software developer, I tried everything: Trello, Jira, Notion, Todoist, Pomodoro apps, etc. Every time I discovered a new tool, I thought "this one is going to work."

None of them did.

Not because they were bad, but because they all had the same problem… they demanded more management than actual work.

The ritual before working

I want to do ONE task. Just one. But before I start, the tool asks me:

  • Which project does this go in?

  • Which epic?

  • Deadline?

  • Priority? (choose from 5 levels)

  • Time estimate?

  • Subtasks?

  • Labels?

And … 30 minutes later, I haven't made any progress… the worst part: The energy and momentum I had to work was spent configuring the system :(

What I really feel

When I can't focus, I feel anxious. A constant noise of "you should be doing something." But I don't know where to start. So I open the tool, see all the tasks, get more overwhelmed. I end the day tired. But not from working, from fighting with my own system.

Does this happen to you?

What I discovered

2 things that changed how I think:

  • There are techniques beyond Pomodoro…

Flowtime, Ultradian, Deep Work… each one works for something different. Not only Pomodoro is the answer for everything.

  • Less is more

Tools with more features aren't better. They're heavier… more decisions, more friction, more and more … what I needed wasn't more options… it was fewer.

So I built Mushin

無心 (Mushin) is a Japanese concept. It means "mind without mind." The state where you act without overthinking. Where work just flows. That's what I want to feel when I work. And that's what I want you to feel.

focus today - Mushin

You write what you're going to do:

> "Write day 1 post blog for mushin pre launch"

3 seconds later, you're working…

Mushin - Focus Session

you didn't choose a project. You didn't manually set a deadline. You didn't create subtasks. Everything appeared on its own. Mushin did it silently. And you only see the timer... your task... nothing else, no noise :)

What I want you to feel

I don't want you to be "more productive.", That word doesn't mean anything anymore. I want you to feel calm, to end the day knowing you made progress. Without the anxiety of pending tasks. Without the exhaustion of fighting with your tool. Calm. That's what I'm looking for.

Where I am

The MVP is almost ready.

Focus mode works… Mushin decomposes tasks and work with 4 productivity techniques.

The timer is simple and clean :) and In a few more weeks I'll open access to everyone. Right now I have early access for some people who have been signing up and want to try it … We're already about 10 Mushin Users using the tool, and I'd like to reach around 30 before opening it completely.a

Why I'm sharing this

I feel nervous launching this. It's personal… It's not just an app… It's something I built because I needed it. And now I'm putting it out there.

Maybe nobody will care. Maybe they will. But I want to share the process. The progress. The mistakes. The real numbers.

Build in public for real.

If you're interested you can join the waitlist https://mushin.work

Or just follow along here. I'll be sharing everything.

No pressure. If it helps you, great. If not, that's okay.

#buildinpublic

If this resonated, let me know
